Finding My Signature Style: What Makes My Illustrations Unique.
Every artist has a signature style that distinct touch that makes their work instantly recognizable. It’s not just about the colors or the lines but the feeling it evokes. For me, illustration is all about creating magical, joyful moments, the kind that make you smile, spark a little wonder, and transport you to a world where the small things matter. But what makes my work stand out? What makes it me?
A Love for Strong Colors and Rich Detail
One of the first things people notice about my work is the color. I love using strong, vibrant tones that bring a sense of life and energy to a piece. But beyond the color itself, my illustrations are layered quite literally. There’s a depth to them, both in texture and in meaning, because I build up my scenes with many intricate layers, adding small details that create a world you can step into.
A Nostalgic, Yesteryear Feel
While my work isn’t locked in the past, theres a definite nod to yesteryear in my style. Instead of sleek, modern minimalism, I gravitate toward the charm of times gone by. This might show up in the architecture of a scene, the clothing of a character, or even the cozy, lived-in feel of a setting. It’s about creating a sense of familiarity and warmth like stepping into a memory.
Why Nostalgia Matters
Just because something is the latest and greatest doesn’t mean it’s built to last. I can remember going to the supermarket as a child, packing groceries into paper bags. Fast forward a few years, and suddenly everything was in plastic. Fast forward again, and now we are back to paper bags and reusable ones too. We have come full circle.
There’s something comforting about older things. They last. They’ve stood the test of time. So many modern, mass-produced items are designed to break and be thrown away, contributing to landfills and waste. But the things we cherish most, the ones that bring us a sense of connection tend to be the things that have a history, that tell a story, that have been passed down or remembered. That’s something I try to bring into my art.
Complete Scenes, Not Just Moments
Many artists create vignettes isolated elements like a building with a tree, a single character with minimal background. That is not my approach. I love crafting entire scenes, filled with little stories waiting to be discovered. You’ll rarely find empty spaces in my work because I enjoy layering in details, adding pieces that enrich the narrative. I want people to get lost in my illustrations, noticing something new each time they look.
A Deep Connection to Every Piece
My love for animals shines through in my work, but beyond that, I have a deep connection to everything I illustrate. If I don’t have a personal connection to a subject already, I take the time to find one. I believe that emotion and authenticity come through in the art itself when something is created from the heart, people can feel it.
Creating Magical Moments and Lasting Memories
More than anything, I want my illustrations to speak to people. I want them to stir memories, spark imagination, and become a part of someone’s story. Art isn’t just about what is on the page, it’s about where you were when you first saw it, the feelings it evoked, the memories it brings back years later. My hope is that my work helps people create their own magical moments, whether in the thoughts it inspires or the memories it becomes a part of.
So, when you look at my work, what stands out to you? What details catch your eye? I’d love to hear how my illustrations connect with you!
