Finding Balance as a Part-Time Artist: Nurturing Passions Amidst Life’s Demands
Balancing work, life, and passion projects is no easy feat, and as someone who juggles part-time artistry alongside a traveling job, I know this all too well. There are days I wish for a virtual assistant to handle the business side of things—bookkeeping, marketing, and daily tasks—so I could dive into my artwork, immersing myself in that creative world. If I had my way, I’d focus solely on creating, exploring new artistic techniques, and letting my ideas flow without the interruption of administrative work.
Embracing a Weekly Day Off
This year, I committed to taking Sundays off—a small but significant change that has helped me carve out space for personal projects and recharge my creative energy. These Sundays aren’t typically about art. Instead, they’ve become a day to explore other passions, like crafting a Waldorf doll, sewing clothes for my granddaughter, making wreaths, or even just decorating around the house. I also use this day to spend time with my husband, whose support is invaluable in keeping everything running smoothly. He understands the time my art and business demand, and he’s there to help when I need it.
Sticking to a day off hasn’t been easy. Many Sundays, I’ve found myself tempted to reach for my iPad, but I remind myself of the importance of recharging. Giving myself this time to enjoy non-artistic projects keeps burnout at bay and lets me rediscover my creative spark when Monday rolls around.
Finding Inspiration in the Everyday
One of my unexpected sources of balance has come from simply appreciating the world outside my window. I’m lucky to live where I can see a beautiful tree that’s grown with us over the years. Watching the changing colors, birds flitting in and out, or wood pigeons swooping gracefully is a moment of peace and inspiration. And on days when I’m working in the studio, seeing my alpacas grazing just outside or hearing their gentle humming as they stroll by brings a sense of calm that words can hardly capture.
And then, of course, there’s Molly, my beloved Shih Tzu mix and “office manager,” who often curls up on my lap. Her presence is a reminder of the importance of connection and the joy of simple moments.
Creating a Routine to Maintain Balance
When I’m working from home, I try to keep a somewhat structured day. It’s easy to let tasks pile up, so I prioritize getting things done as I plan them. Some days, though, things slip by (like preparing my monthly diary—sometimes it’s ready well in advance, and sometimes I wonder where the month has gone!). I’ve learned that balance requires a mix of discipline and grace, being kind to myself on the days when things don’t go perfectly.
A Continuous Journey
Balance is a work in progress, and as I get older, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of staying healthy and fit, mentally and physically. It’s not only about achieving specific goals but about enjoying the journey, savoring moments of peace, and cultivating a lifestyle that allows room for my art, family, and passions. We all have our unique balance to find, and the small, mindful adjustments—like taking time to observe nature, engage in personal projects, and share quiet moments with loved ones—have become my steadying force.
For anyone navigating a similar path, I encourage you to embrace small, restorative moments, listen to your needs, and work toward a rhythm that fills you with joy, peace, and passion for what you love.
